Il barbiere di Siviglia, opera-buffa by Rossini
The term opera buffa itself evokes a work in particular: The Barber of Seville.
With this opera, Rossini achieved a level of perfection in the genre - through a combination of comedy, invention, and a touch of madness - that few composers after him would ever reach.
The composer took a comic play by Beaumarchais, already perfect in both its form and its subversive impertinence. Rossini added, with his music, a certain joy, an element of poetry and vitality which rendered it an even more irresistable production. Who else could have translated the joy of living to the joy of singing?
