Don Pasquale, opera by Donizetti
Weddings, the old fashioned way…
Donizetti's Don Pasquale is a rich old bachelor, who at the beginning of the opera buffa is in a fit of rage. His nephew and only inheritor, Ernesto, refuses to marry the one chosen for him, a lady of a certain age, for he loves only young Norina with her humble origins.
Doctor Malatesta, a friend of the family, comes up with a plan to help the lovebirds. He convinces Don Pasquale to marry the doctor's sister, Sofronia (who is in fact Norina in disguise). A perfect, demure lady until the wedding day, she then transforms into an insufferable hag who spends money like water...
